A Lady Gaga Google Search shows how AI is upending the world's most profitable online business

'Site owners are terrified.'
Google's new AI-driven Search Generative Experience (SGE) is set to revolutionize how people find information online, potentially affecting thousands of businesses that depend on Google for visibility and ad revenue.

In 2022, Google, which generated $150 billion from this segment, began experimenting with SGE, giving direct AI-generated answers before traditional blue link results. This shift could impact the current model that most site owners and SEO experts rely on, sparking concerns in the industry.

Business Insider's tests revealed significant differences between traditional searches and SGE, notably in the prominence of links. The AI tends to provide more elaborate summaries, with a diminished emphasis on external links, which could change how users interact with content and advertisements online.

Google aims to balance this AI responsiveness while still driving traffic to publishers, but SGE has yet to become the default search method.

Comparative queries, including for Lady Gaga's partnership with Tiffany's, demonstrated SGE's evolving approach, from initially providing sourceless summaries to eventually integrating more links to external content. This development is seen as crucial to maintaining the existing online business ecosystem, which relies heavily on Google's referrals.

Competitors such as Microsoft's Bing with OpenAI's ChatGPT are pressuring Google to innovate, as forecasts predict a shift away from standard search engines to AI chatbots.

Nonetheless, Google remains a frontrunner due to its existing user base and established market presence. The future of SGE is still uncertain, but its integration is cautiously advancing, with Google continuously refining its balance of AI summaries and useful links.
