On Wednesday in Washington,
Elon Musk announced plans to target federal spending as the newly appointed head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Supported by President-elect
Donald Trump and potentially by the conservative Supreme Court, Musk aims to tackle hundreds of billions of dollars in government expenditures.
This includes defunding entities such as public broadcasting and Planned Parenthood, which he perceives as threats to US democracy.
Teaming up with fellow businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, Musk emphasizes that they will serve as external volunteers focused on administrative streamlining rather than federal appointments.
Musk and Ramaswamy plan to identify federal regulations that lack Congressional approval, which Trump could overturn via executive order.
They argue this initiative would amend previous executive overreach.
Furthermore, the aim is to cut federal expenditures by more than $500 billion and drastically reduce government staffing.
With a strong electoral backing and a 6-3 conservative majority in the Supreme Court, they see significant potential for lasting government restructuring.
