President Biden nominated Mari Carmen Aponte as US Ambassador to Panama

The Foreign Minister of Panama, Erika Mouynes welcomes the nomination and believes that this appointment will strengthen relations between the two nations.
This Friday the White House announced that the President of the United States , Joe Biden made public his intention to nominate Mari Carmen Aponte, as the Extraordinary Plenipotentiary Ambassador to the Republic of Panama.

As highlighted by the information published on the website of the White House, Aponte maintains among her experiences having served as the United States ambassador to El Salvador and being acting undersecretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs.

Aponte is currently a consultant in Washington, DC, and previously worked as a consultant and solo law practitioner in both New York and Washington, DC. She is a former White House fellow.

Aponte earned a BA from Rosemont College, Pennsylvania, an MA from Villanova University, and a JD from Temple University School of Law. She speaks Spanish and French.

Regarding this nomination, Panamanian Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes assured that it is received with satisfaction and that her probable appointment will be decisive for the strengthening of diplomatic relations.

It should be noted that the appointments of the ambassadors have to be approved by the United States Senate, which will be in charge of holding hearings to evaluate the candidacies.

Panama has not had a US ambassador since 2018, when diplomat John Feeley resigned from office.
