1,839 Panamanians have learned to read and write between July 2019 and March 2021

The Ministry of Social Development ( Mides ), reported that a total of 1,839 Panamanians have learned to read and write through the program "Move around Panama, I can do it," between July 2019 and March 2021.
According to the program administered by the Directorate of Literacies of Mides, it has a gender component, since 68.3% is equivalent to 1,256 literate women compared to 31.7% who represent a total of 583 men, who have completed the course; "These are rural women who have empowered themselves by having the opportunity to fend for themselves."

The entity explained that the Ngäbe Buglé Comarca leads the largest number of literate Panamanians (645), followed by the province of Bocas del Toro (361) and Chiriquí (226) who for various reasons never attended a classroom. Darién (210) and Panama Oeste (209).

The program has been transferred to vulnerable townships such as Hato Julí and Salto Dupi, in the district of Mironó, in the Ngäbe Buglé region, which present a multidimensional poverty index of 98.7% and 98.1% respectively according to the IPM-C, prepared by the Technical Secretariat of the Social Cabinet, attached to Mides.

María Inés Castillo, Minister of Social Development, indicated that it is a program that restores the rights of citizens, by providing them with a basic tool for growth, the alphabet.

"Move around Panama, I can do it", registers a remarkable growth despite the pandemic. "Since January 2020, more than 100 classrooms have been installed where 840 citizens have learned to read brochures, books and newspapers, a skill that until now was unknown to them," says a statement from Mides.

How do you teach to read and write? The Government, through Mides, is applying the method "I can do it" which lasts for seven (7) weeks, a period in which the students, through volunteer teachers, receive 65 theoretical-practical classes. This is a basic writing program that teaches students to write their names and write a basic letter.

It also allows participants to enter the educational and labor system through an alliance that Mides has articulated with the Ministry of Education (Meduca), the National Institute of Professional Training and Training for Human Development (Inadeh) and private companies.
