Con la crecida del río Santa María se perdieron 240,000 libras de camarón aproximadamente

240,000 pounds of shrimp have been lost after floods

The floods and landslides generated by Hurricane Eta, ruined the production of 242 hectares, distributed in 32 ponds of the shrimp company Palangosta, SA that was ready to harvest.
With the rising of the Santa María River, approximately 240,000 pounds of shrimp were lost.

In addition, ponds were flooded, perimeter walls collapsed and the access roads of the main shrimp farms in the Aguadulce district, in the Coclé province, and in Herrera province deteriorated.

The administrator of the Panama Aquatic Resources Authority (ARAP), Flor Torrijos, toured the affected areas in order to gather data to establish the extent of the damage, and reiterated that they are working in the search for economic and social solutions that help mitigate losses.

On the other hand, the excess of rain caused a sudden change in salinity levels that was estimated to be a minimum of 20 parts per million (ppm) and with the floods it fell to 4 ppm, which resulted in the death of shrimp in ponds.
