525 cases of pregnant women with Covid-19 reported in Panama

A report from the Ministry of Health (Minsa) shows that a total of 525 cases of pregnant women with Covid-19 have been reported in Panama, between March and August.
According to the report, in the month of July the highest number of cases was reported in pregnant women with 162. In addition, the notifications have been generated mostly in hospital units under the responsibility of the Ministry of Health, in a few cases in the Social Security Fund and few reports in private units.

The Health Regions with the highest number of cases are headed by the Metropolitan Health Region (140), followed by Panama Oeste (100) and San Miguelito (84).

While in the townships where the highest number of cases of pregnancies with Covid-19 accumulate, they are headed by Arraiján, Belisario Porras and Belisario Frías.

Of the total number of pregnancies, the Ministry of Health reported 8 deaths. Of these, in 7 cases it was decided to end their pregnancy for better management of respiratory failure in the intensive care unit. Only one of the patients died while pregnant.

Finally, the Health entity states that to date, specific information on the impact of the virus on pregnancy is scarce, probably due to the low number of cases in the world; however, the information available so far has shown that pregnant women do not appear to be more likely to contract the infection than the general population.
