A law approved to regulate single-use plastics starting 2021

On Thursday 23 July, the Bill No. 26 that regulates the reduction and progressive replacement of single-use plastics from 2021, was approved in third debate.
This initiative establishes the regulatory framework governing single-use plastics in the national territory, as part of the country's environmental public policy.

In addition, it seeks to transversally encourage sustainable development in the public and private sectors, primarily in commerce and industry, progressively reducing and replacing the use of single-use plastic materials.

The term plastic generically names a diverse number of synthetic materials that share similar properties in terms of the ability to be molded under certain conditions of temperature, pressure and concentration.

Plastics generate a set of classifications that are tailored to commercial specifications. So-called "single use" are those products made of plastic whose life time is very short and then become non-biodegradable waste that remain in the environment for many years.

Some of these are: stirrers, ear cleaning swabs, reeds, fast food food containers, disposable plates and cutlery, final packaging plastic bags, and others.

The bill was presented by Independent Representative Edison Broce and other MPs.
