Colombia Begins Exploration of 18th Century 'Holy Grail' Shipwreck

The Colombian government has begun exploring the San José galleon, dubbed the 'holy grail of shipwrecks.' The ship, sunk in 1708 near Cartagena, is estimated to contain one dollar20 billion in treasure. The project involves advanced technology to catalog archaeological finds, with no initial plans for excavation.
The Colombian government has commenced exploring the San José galleon, an 18th Century Spanish shipwreck known as the 'holy grail of shipwrecks.' Located near Cartagena, the San José was sunk by the British Royal Navy in 1708, carrying an estimated one dollar20 billion in treasure intended for the Spanish king's war effort.

The project involves remote sensors and underwater robots to catalog archaeological materials, as noted by the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History.

Culture Minister Juan David Correa described the effort as 'unprecedented,' aiming to preserve the site for its scientific and heritage value.

The shipwreck, discovered in 2015, is still embroiled in legal disputes over its ownership, claimed by both Spain and US salvage company Sea Search Armada.
