Coronavirus cases increase to 6,720; April arrests for violating quarantine 18,000

May 1 records total 192 deaths from the new coronavirus in Panama since the start of the pandemic, according to figures revealed by the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

In the daily report, the head of Epidemiology of the Minsa, Lourdes Moreno, announced 4 new deaths and a total of 6,720 accumulated cases across the country.

He said that currently there are 3,061 people in home isolation of which 1,127 are in hospital hotels. There are 361 hospitalized patients, of which 276 are in the ward and 85 in the intensive care units.

The number of patients recovered from the new coronavirus is 3,106. 622 recoveries are confirmed by laboratory tests and 2,484 by clinical tests.

The Vice Minister of Health, Luis Sucre, asked the Panamanians for patience: "We respect your right to demonstrate, but we ask that you avoid exposing yourself to the Coronavirus, avoid crowds, and make complaints [if needed] to your local authorities and government through your local representatives."

Report of the Ministry of the month of April

The Minister of Security, Juan Manuel Pino, reported of the arrests and raids carried out by the police forces during the month of April.

He highlighted that 18,370 people who failed to comply with the quarantine measure were detained. 62.4% of the retentions occurred in the provinces of Panama, Panamá Oeste and Chiriquí.

During April, 2.7 tons of drugs were seized, and several distributors were arrested. There were several cases of taxi drivers who lend themselves to transfer illicit substances.

30 homicides were committed and most of them were gang related.

More than 145 break-ins were carried out, Pino said.

215 of domestic violence cases were reported, 811 less than same month of the previous year's statistics. He attributed this drop to the dry law that prevails from the state of national emergency, decreed by the pandemic of the Covid-19.
