Cortizo llama a la población a mantener la calma ante los efectos de Iota

Cortizo calls on the population to remain calm as Iota approaches

President Laurentino Cortizo said this Monday, November 16, that the emergency operations center is already operational and called on the population to remain calm and serenity in the face of the collateral effects of Iota, which is expected to make landfall tonight in Nicaragua.
Cortizo in the report on the emergency situation indicated that in this crisis disinformation is a crime, for which he invited the population to inquire only in official government accounts.

I am convinced that all united and with faith we will move forward with this challenge, said the president in the report.

In Panama this Monday the red alert remains only in the provinces of Chiriquí and Bocas del Toro and in the Ngäbe-Buglé region. While the rest of the country remains on yellow alert for the collateral effects of Iota.

Pilar López, from Etesa Hydrometeorology, recalled that Iota is strengthening and at 1:00 pm it became a category 5 hurricane.

López indicated that Iota would enter Nicaragua through its northeast coasts. Therefore, strong winds will be generated on the Pacific coasts.

While the swells in the Pacific would be between 6 and 8 feet. Therefore, the high tides would reach 18 feet.

Due to the intermittent rains that have fallen in the country, landslides have occurred in Chiriquí and floods in Darién and the Emberá region.

One of the sectors of the Darién province where floods are reported is Jaqué, where personnel from the joint task force were displaced.

Floods in Darien province have not damaged the homes and belongings of residents.

On the other hand, a team from the Ministry of Public Works worked to clear the road to Cerro Colorado after a landslide obstructed it on Monday.

Earlier, floods were reported in the communities of Sambú and Puerto Indio, due to the overflowing of the Sambú and Sabalo rivers.

In Panama, a red alert was declared this Sunday, November 15, in the western sector of the country due to the collateral effects of Hurricane Iota, which will make landfall on Monday night in Nicaragua.

Iota will make landfall as a category five hurricane and will hit the same area that devastated Hurricane Eta.
