Dr. José González, national head of the Maternal and Child Program of the Social Security Fund, pointed out that the fact that a mother is positive with COVID-19 is not a limitation for her to breastfeed her baby.
COVID-19 is not a contraindication for breastfeeding, that is very important. What mothers have to do is take extreme hygiene measures. If you are positive and you are going to breastfeed your baby, what you should do is wash your hands well, wear your mask covering your nose as instructed by the authorities, clean your nipple, but you can breastfeed your baby, González told RPC Radio.
However, the doctor stressed that if there are health situations where the mother is under some medication that have adverse effects on the baby, which prevents them from breastfeeding, the mothers should look for other alternatives.
Dr. González asked mothers who can offer their milk to support babies who cannot be breastfed to call 6354-9122 and provide their information.
González recommended mothers to maintain a good diet while they provide milk to their baby, in view of the fact that this diet will provide the child with antibodies during the first six months of life.
