COVID: Panama exceeds 7,000 infected, and total 197 dead

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported Saturday, May 2, that the number of people infected by the coronavirus rose to 7,090 and of those 197 have died.
The Vice Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, said that they see with concern that the figures are not going down and that many people are not complying with the quarantine.

"We are not achieving the objectives required for this stage," he said. And he warned, if the situation continues the same, they will have to postpone the gradual reopening of various sectors.

He said that in recent days, people are failing to comply with the quarantine measures in the country, imposed due to the pandemic.

At the same time, he urged sectors in Panama West, in Veraguas and in the capital, such as San Francisco, to comply more rigorously with measures to mitigate the pandemic.

Lourdes Moreno, Head of Epidemiology at Minsa, said that in the last 24 hours 1,459 new cases were tested, of which 370 tested positive.

There are 3,375 people in home isolation, 285 people are quarantined in hospitals, and 89 in intensive care units (ICU).

The positive news is that the number of recoveries also has increased. Moreno said that in the last 24 hours 19 people recovered, confirmed by laboratory, which in total add up to 641.

And the clinically recovered add up to 2,503.

NEW MEASURES IN KOSKUNA

Deputy Minister Sucre announced that they will apply new measures in the indigenous community of Koskuna, in Veracruz, Arraiján district.

He said that in this sector, where the highest cases were registered in West Panama, a safe conduit will be given to the heads of families where there are no cases of Covid-19, so that these people will be able to go to their jobs or go grocery shopping.

Koskuna was isolated as a sanitary measure due to the rapid rise of the number of new cases. It is guarded by the Senafront.
