Deaths from rains in Panama increases to 19; there are 12 still missing

The number of people killed by floods and landslides in Panama increased to 19, the security forces reported this Thursday, November 12.
According to the situation report in the areas indirectly affected by hurricane Eta, the bodies of the deceased have been located in the following areas: 2 in Tizingal, a minor in the Florentina farm, 3 people in Renacimiento, 3 in Bambito, 4 in Paso Ancho and finca Morgan, and 6 in the district of Besikó.

Meanwhile, there are 12 people who have not been located; 3,815 people have been affected; 918 rescued and 2,527 are in 32 shelters enabled in different regions of the country.

The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) reported that the percentage of roads open to the passage of vehicles increased to 61%.

There are 40% of roads restored in the province of Chiriquí, 53% in the Comarca Ngäbe Buglé, 85% in Veraguas and 100% in the provinces of Coclé and Panamá Oeste.

Rafael Sabonge, Minister of Public Works, said that one of the most difficult points is in the Hornitos area.

It is the only land route to Bocas del Toro, and the final solution would be to build a bridge and that is obviously going to take time, said the minister.

Sabonge explained that the immediate solution would be to build a ford and provide access through the Chiriquicito sector, although the problem of over-saturated soils is being faced and new landslides still occur.
