The identity of the gang and the man they were safeguarding, who later succumbed to his gunshot wounds, is still unknown. Post the hospital incident, officials also uncovered a nearby "rehabilitation center” serving as a gang's command post and illegal brothel.

The arrests are part of a broader crackdown on gang violence, initiated by President Daniel Noboa, who declared a national emergency. Since January 9, over 2,700 individuals have been detained amidst the declared "armed internal conflict."

The military is now supporting police efforts, following a series of attacks, including one where a prosecutor was fatally shot in Guayaquil. The government reports that the violence has also led to the rescue of 201 hostages from rioting inmates in prisons.
