El Salvador Police Foil Presidential Inauguration Bomb Plot

Police in El Salvador have thwarted a plot to detonate explosives during President Nayib Bukele's second-term inauguration. Seven individuals, including former congressman Jose Santos Melara, were arrested. Bukele, re-elected in February, implemented a controversial security strategy leading to significant drops in murder rates. Opposition voices caution against potential false accusations by the police.
Police in El Salvador have thwarted a plot to detonate explosives at various locations on Saturday, coinciding with President Nayib Bukele's second-term inauguration.

Seven individuals, described as 'veterans' of the country's 1980-1992 civil war, were arrested, including the alleged financier, former congressman Jose Santos Melara of the leftist FMLN party.

The suspects, part of the 'Salvadoran Insurrection Brigade,' intended to target gas stations, supermarkets, and public institutions.

Bukele, who was expelled from the FMLN in 2017 and later criticized the 1992 peace accords, won re-election in February with massive support for his security strategy, which included the suspension of civil liberties and the arrest of over 80,000 Salvadorans without charge.

This strategy has led to a significant drop in murder rates.

Opposition politician Luis Parada condemned violence in politics and expressed concern over the police's history of false accusations.

Bukele's second-term inauguration follows a 2021 court ruling allowing his re-election, despite previous constitutional prohibitions.
