Brazil's Bolsonaro Calls For Mass Protest Amid Allegations He Attempted Coup

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has called for substantial public demonstrations in response to allegations that he engineered a coup to retain power.
Denying any coup attempt, Bolsonaro encouraged supporters to join a peaceful Sao Paulo rally to support democracy, with hopes for a turnout of 500,000 participants.

Following his election loss to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro has faced intense legal scrutiny, including the confiscation of his passport.

Despite Bolsonaro's denials and a refusal to answer questions during a police interrogation, investigators suggest he engaged in anti-democratic actions, including efforts to undermine the credibility of Brazil's voting system and to encourage military intervention if defeated.

In connection to these claims, a video has surfaced showing Bolsonaro berating ministers to assist in discrediting the electoral system. Additionally, Bolsonaro confronts multiple investigations on various charges, from faking COVID-19 vaccination documents to mismanaging foreign gifts.

Despite being barred from seeking office until 2030 for undermining the electoral process, he remains a key opposition figure, with this upcoming rally serving as a critical measure of his political influence.

Officials such as Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas and Mayor Ricardo Nunes are among those expected to attend. With municipal elections approaching, Bolsonaro's show of support will be pivotal.

His lawyer anticipates between 500,000 and 700,000 rallying demonstrators. Bolsonaro has also called for attendees to wear Brazil's national colors as a sign of solidarity.
