German Health Care System Faces Critical Shortage of Care Workers

Germany is facing a shortage of care workers, and many foreign nurses and care workers are being recruited to fill the gap.
Brazilian nurse Thaiza Maria Silva Farias started her own recruitment agency, Nursewelt, to help fill the gap in German hospitals and clinics.

The Federal Employment Office in Germany states that for every unemployed care worker in the country, there are currently three open positions.

The lack of workers in the field has led to a decline in the number of nursing trainees in the country, which has caused a lack of nurses.

The Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil has stated that Germany and Brazil are a perfect match for nursing and care work and that the appeal to care workers can be mutually beneficial.

The Federal Employment Agency in Germany has hired 656 foreign nurses in 2022, primarily from the Philippines, but the number of foreign nurses hired is still a small percentage of the overall need for nurses in the country.

The article discusses the issue of nurses from Latin America emigrating to Germany to work in the health care sector.

The Foundation for Patient Rights head Eugen Brysch stated that the few hundred Brazilian nurses won't fix the problem.

Mexican surgeon Xavier Tello stated that brain drain is normal in a globalized world and the few people in the region are aware of foreign efforts to recruit them.

Silvia Farias believes that the quality of life is better and nurses have more security in Germany, but Tello stated that few Mexicans would emigrate to Germany due to the culture shock.

Ukranian nurses working in German hospitals are also mentioned, but there is no mention of any specific improvement needed for their integration.

The article was originally published in German.
