Sancionan Ley que regula la reducción y el reemplazo progresivo de los plásticos de un solo uso

Law enacted to progressively replace single-use plastics in Panama

The President of the Republic of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo, sanctioned on Wednesday Law No. 187 of December 2, 2020, which regulates the progressive reduction and replacement of single-use plastics throughout the country, starting in the year 2021.
Plastics generate a set of classifications that are adapted to commercial specifications. The so-called "single use" are those products that are used only once and then are thrown away, which are not recycled and pollute the environment and health.

According to the document, 11 products are specified that should be progressively replaced in the years 2021, 2022 and 2023 by other options with less impact, among these: q-tips, plastic covers for laundry clothes, plastic packaging for eggs, stirrers, cocktail sticks, sticks for sweets, fast food, disposable plates and cutlery, plastic bags for final packaging, and others.

One of the main objectives of the Law is to eliminate products that generate a great load of contamination to the earth.

Cortizo congratulated the independent deputy Edison Broce who proposed the Law since he contributes to the policies and actions of our country in the field of environmental protection that point towards a sustainable economy aligned with the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals.

He announced that Panama was invited to the Climate Ambition Summit, sponsored by the United Nations, where the actions that the country develops in favor of the environment will be briefly exposed, and talk about the opportunity to integrate the thematic approach and the strategies and actions to recovery with the purpose of laying the foundations for an economy oriented towards sustainability and job creation.

On July 23, the plenary session of the National Assembly approved Bill 26 in a third debate, which progressively reduces and replaces the use of single-use plastic starting in 2021.
