Mexico investigates forced sterilizations in US immigration center

Mexico is investigating a United States immigration detention center for possible cases of forced sterilization without the consent of the detainees, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported on Monday.
In a statement, the SRE noted that the Government of Mexico has promptly followed up on complaints of medical malpractices, particularly regarding the performance of alleged hysterectomies carried out without consent at the immigration detention center in Irwin County, Georgia.

The SRE recalled that the aforementioned center is under the responsibility of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

A few days ago, ICE indicated that the gynecologist Mahendra Amin, from Georgia, no longer cares for detained immigrants after a nurse reported that at the Irwin County Detention Center, in Georgia, some of them had been subjected to the removal of the uterus without having requested it or without understanding what it was about.

The US immigration agency said, however, that it vehemently disputes the implication that the detainees are used for experimental medical procedures.

The scandal was exposed two weeks ago after several human rights organizations, including Project South and the Government Accountability Project, filed a complaint with the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to denounce a series of dangerous practices that occur in Irwin Prison.

On Friday, more than 170 members of the House of Representatives proposed a resolution condemning unnecessary and non-consensual medical procedures, including hysterectomies, in immigration detention centers where the government holds more than 20,000 people.
