Cámara Nacional de Turismo aboga por prorrogar el periodo de los contratos suspendidos a 6 meses

National Chamber of Tourism advocates extending the period of suspended contracts to 6 months

The National Chamber of Tourism of Panama (Camtur) asked the authorities to address "urgently" the establishment of a "real" economic recovery plan, as a result of the health and economic crisis caused by Covid-19.
With this, the definitive closure of many companies -both small and large- that are being affected by the current circumstances, warned this union that brings together associations dedicated to tourism.

Camtur asked to consider, as a top priority, extending the period of the suspended contracts to six months from January 2021.

It should be remembered that Law 157 of August 3 that allows the suspension of employment contracts has a deadline of December 31, 2020.

Likewise, it required defining the procedure for handling employment contracts on issues such as maternity, sick leave, during the pandemic.

Ernesto Orillac, president of Camtur, announced that around 25% of the contracts of the collaborators of tourism companies have been reactivated and that it is "very difficult" for all companies to open.

Without an extension of the suspension of contracts, they will not be able to open more than 50% of tourism companies and will have to close more than 30% of those that were able to open and are operating, which would put more than 65 thousand direct jobs and more at risk of 100,000 indirect, said Camtur, in a statement.

Companies need to reorganize in order to survive and maintain the workforce, on which thousands of Panamanian families depend, Orillac said.
