Panama could be facing a second wave of covid-19; more cases are reported than in the initial phases

This Sunday alone, more than 1,270 positive cases of covid-19 and some 21 deaths from the disease were reported in the country.
The director of the Social Security Fund, Enrique Lau Cortés, acknowledged that with the opening of economic activities, as part of the national strategy, the number of people infected with covid-19 has increased and even the figures are higher than in the initial stage.

This Sunday alone, more than 1,270 positive cases of covid-19 and about 21 deaths from the disease were reported in the country. With the increase in cases registered in recent days, Panama could be facing a second wave of covid-19 cases.

In fact, we are having more cases than we had in the worst moment of the initial phases of the month of July and this should call us to a deep reflection because it seems that time has been influencing people to lose their fear of covid-19, confirmed today the director of the CSS on National Television.

Cortés explained that with the economic reactivation as more people go out onto the streets, some of them to work and others making inappropriate use of this facility, more people have become ill, more people will require hospitals, more people will go to intensive care and deaths are going to increase.

In this sense, he stressed that young people are still the sector of the population that is relaxing the most in biosafety measures and are becoming infected by the disease, putting the health of older adults who suffer from chronic diseases at risk.

Young people think that nothing is going to happen to them and they are acting as if this were their last parties, and there will be no more in the future; and that uncontrolled debauchery, disrespecting biosecurity measures, causes these young people to become infected and have contact with older people and these older people are really at great risk, he said.

He said that Panama does not escape what happens in other countries where, in addition to the pandemic, the syndemic also affects them, since there are other epidemics such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes and poverty that also afflict them and are claiming human lives.

He pointed out that there is a segment of the population that needs to leave homes because they are informal workers, they are those who have to daily seek sustenance from their families; We can criticize them, but we must help them to follow biosecurity measures.

They must always remember biosecurity measures. That non-pharmacological measures or not taking medicines have a much more positive effect on prevention, said Cortés, referring to avoiding crowds, permanently using a mask, washing hands with soap and water, or its defect the use of alcoholic gel, are essential measures to prevent contagion.

Lau also referred to the concept of the family bubble, noting that we must change it because the population was being confused. In that sense, he called for maintaining the home bubble.

Home bubble is the people you live with. A relative who lives in a separate home is not part of the home bubble. Any person who does not belong to that bubble is a possibility of carrying the virus to the home bubble, explained Cortés.
