Panamanian Justice endorses extradition of a Colombian to the US for drug trafficking

A Panamanian court declared Saturday the arrest for extradition to the US of a Colombian citizen for drug-related crimes and placed him under the orders of the Panamanian Foreign Ministry.
The unidentified Colombian is required in the United States for the alleged commission of drug-related crimes and conspiracy to introduce and distribute illegal substances, the Panama Judicial Branch (OJ) reported.

The detention for extradition purposes was requested by the United States authorities, based on the bilateral Extradition Treaty and the United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.

The ruling was issued by the Superior Court of Appeals of the First Judicial District of Panama, made up of Judges Greta Marchosky, Giovannina Antinori and Adrián Hernández, during a hearing held this Saturday.

In the course of the hearing, the Colombian citizen accepted the simplified extradition process and did not renounce the principle of normative specialty.

The principle of specialty implies that the requesting State, in this case the United States, can only judge the subject for the crime for which his extradition was authorized.

Furthermore, the court ordered that the foreigner be placed under the orders of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Panama to conclude the extradition process.

The court determined the confiscation of the assets that were in the citizen's possession at the time of his arrest.

At the hearing, the Public Ministry was represented by the Superior Prosecutor for International Affairs, José Candanedo, and the Colombian citizen for the particular technical defense of attorney Carlos Herrera Morán.
