Plenary of the Assembly ratifies Miriam Cheng and María Chen as judges of the Court

Miriam Cheng Rosas and María Chen will occupy their positions as magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice as of January 1, 2022.
The Plenary of the National Assembly (AN) ratified the appointments of Miriam Yadira Cheng Rosas and María Cristina Chen as magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ).

Ariadne Maribel García and Salvador Domínguez Barrios were also ratified as their alternates.

The appointments were approved with 47 votes in favor, zero against and zero abstentions.

Earlier, the Credentials Commission recommended to the Plenary of the National Assembly to ratify the appointments of Cheng and Chen and their alternates.

Cheng Rosas was appointed by the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo as magistrate of the First Civil Chamber in replacement of Hernán de Leon, and Chen as magistrate of the Third Administrative and Labor Chamber in replacement of Luis Ramón Fábrega.

"I want to thank you, on my behalf, but also on behalf of Judge Miriam Cheng, for the trust placed in us to administer justice in compliance with the Constitution and the law and respecting the fundamental rights of citizens at all times," Chen said after his ratification in plenary.

He described as historic that the Supreme Court of Justice has a majority of women among its magistrates.

"The challenge and commitment we have is with the improvement of justice, with the simplification of procedures and compliance with due process, but above all with a Court that has as its north the protection of the individual and their dignity, " he concluded.

Miriam Cheng has more than 35 years of experience in the administration of justice in civil, constitutional, family, juvenile, consumer protection and antitrust matters.

For her part, María Cristina Chen, has a degree in Law and Political Science from the Latin University of Panama and served as a professor of Commercial Law at the University of Panama and an independent litigator.

Both will hold their positions as magistrates as of January 1, 2022.
