Police knew about a possible kidnapping, but not that it was the president's brother

After the attempted kidnapping of Moisés Cortizo, brother of the President of the Republic of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo, the director of the National Police, Gabriel Medina, said that they were handling information about a kidnapping conspiracy, however they did not know who it was.
With a minimum degree of time we handled this information that allowed us to frustrate this fact, however we did not know who it was. But later, thanks to the follow-up work, we obtained a degree of information on the quality of the person, but it was not until the moment that we contacted the victim that we realized 100% that it was the brother of the President, he said.

Medina explained that, they had no confirmation that this group had carried out kidnappings before, but some of those captured had prior criminal records.

He added that so far there is no confirmation that they are linked to international drug trafficking, however investigations are being carried out.

Five people are under the precautionary measure of preventive detention for the kidnapping attempt, which was took place in the La Mitra sector of La Chorrera, Panama Oeste province.
