ATP reimagina el Turismo Sostenible y Consciente con su nuevo Plan Maestro 2020- 2025

Sustainable Tourism Master Plan 2020-2025 approved

The National Tourism Council (CNT) of Panama unanimously approved the Master Plan for Sustainable Tourism 2020-2025 (PMTS).
The Plan reactivates the Tourism, Conservation and Research (TCI) strategy, developed for the country by ecologist Hana Ayala, more than 20 years ago, with proposals that value the country's conservation and sustainability efforts and its differentiated nature offer, culture and history.

According to Iván Eskildsen, General Administrator of the ATP, they seek to highlight the natural and cultural heritage of Panama, to generate tourism, for which the original TCI Heritage Routes scheme has been updated, now through three axes: Heritage Cultural, Green Heritage and Blue Heritage (marine).

There are 19 circuits that make up the routes, which were developed in workshops in conjunction with the team from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), the Biomuseum, the Ministry of the Environment, and the Ministry of Culture.

Within the Colmena Plan, it is proposed to improve the quality of life of the communities with the greatest economic poverty in the country, with the PMTS. In addition, the “Panama Indígena” and “Panama Afro” tourist circuits are proposed, designed with the contribution of the groups directly involved, to turn tourist activities into effective tools against poverty and inequality.

According to the ATP, the total investment budget for the 2020-2025 period is estimated at $301.9 million, of which: $169.3 million will come from the Tourism Promotion Fund (PROMTUR) and $100 million will be a loan already approved by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and endorsed by the Comptroller's Office.

The first international appointment for this relaunch of tourism will be the virtual fair Experience Panama Expo, which will take place from September 25 to 27, with the participation of local exhibitors and international buyers, according to the entity.
