With the German football Bundesliga famously returning next Saturday, and the UFC celebrating a massive event last night in Florida (both without audiences), we want to take a quick look at the sports scene in Panama.
Professional sports league around the world have suspended their operations due to the ongoing
COVID-19 pandemic. As the world is slowly trying to return to normality, so are athletes and sports clubs.
When the lockdown came into effect in Panama on March 25th, the national football league (LPF) had already canceled its current tournament due to the virus, becoming one of the first leagues in the world to do so. This week the Panamanian Football Federation (Fepafut) announced a plan for a return to competition, safeguarding the welfare of players and all persons involved. Each team must form its own commitee of medical professionals. Training may be permitted in late July, and the start of the next tournament could occur by the end of August, according to LPF director Mario Corro.
The other popular national sport, baseball, generally is played during the summer months. Because of the
coronavirus the main tournament (Torneo Mayor) was never initiated. Now the Panamanian Baseball Federation (Fedebeis) has announced its intention to resume the championship for the month of August. The games are to be held behind closed doors at the Roberto "Flaca Bala" Hernández stadium in Los Santos and the Remón Cantera stadium in Coclé. Since these are closed-door games, it is expected that the media will support the broadcast of the games.
