Las autoridades sanitarias están adecuando instalaciones médicas, deportivas y hospitales de campañas para aumentar la capacidad hospitalaria

The number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients grows in Panama

Panama already accumulates 296,269 cases of COVID-19 and 4,738 deaths after more than 10 months of pandemic, amid a rebound in the virus that is facing restrictions on mobility and has raised the number of hospitalized to more than 2,680, something unprecedented in the country.
The Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported this Saturday that 2,681 patients are hospitalized, 233 in intensive care units (ICU) and 2,448 in the general ward.

The Health office cited the most recent report from the Pan American Health Organization ( PAHO ), with data as of January 12, according to which "nationwide there is an occupation of 58% of hospital beds in the ward, from 76% of ICU and semi-ICU beds, and 41% of ventilators".

The same report indicated that "in week 1 of 2021, the average hospital admissions is 2,173 with an increase of 28% (479 patients) in the last two weeks, and there is an average of 226 in the ICU, increasing the 23.5% (43 patients) in the same period".

Panama, a country of 4.2 million inhabitants, has been experiencing a rebound in COVID-19 for more than two months that has led it to set record numbers of new cases, deaths and diagnostic tests performed, and is ranked as the nation with the second highest incidence rate of the new coronavirus in the continent.

The health authorities are adapting medical facilities, sports and field hospitals to increase hospital capacity, which is "very committed" as recognized by the Minsa.

The speed of the pandemic rebound has begun to slow as a result of the restrictions and quarantines implemented since last December and that, in the case of the capital and its surroundings, began to be lifted on Thursday through a gradual schedule that will run until March 15. next.

The Minsa reported 2,677 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, which raised the accumulated number of confirmed infections since last March to 296,269.

Deaths since the pandemic began now total 4,738, of which 45 have been registered in the last 24 hours, said the Ministry of Health, which updated the figures, also adding 4 late-reported cases.

In the last 24 hours, 16,130 tests were carried out to detect the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes covid, which yielded a positivity of 16.5%.
