Twitter withdraws from EU's disinformation code, defying legal requirements
Twitter has withdrawn from the European Union's voluntary code to combat disinformation, despite warnings from the EU that it will be legally required to comply with the code from 25 August.
Twitter is one of several tech companies that have signed the code, which aims to prevent profiteering from disinformation and fake news and increase transparency and curb the spread of bots and fake accounts.
However, critics say that under Elon Musk's ownership, moderation at Twitter has been reduced, allowing an increase in the spread of disinformation.
The EU has also introduced a Digital Services Act, which obliges firms with more than 45 million monthly active users in the EU to comply with rules to tackle illegal online content.
