Known for tackling sensitive cases of civil war crimes, environmental justice, and corruption, Meléndez – an Afro Colombian lawyer who represents similar communities – finds himself exposed to heightened danger.

Despite a 2009 mandate by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights for Colombia to protect him, his security measures have been progressively downscaled.

Meléndez criticizes the Colombian government for "talking green" internationally while endorsing environmentally damaging projects domestically.

He doesn't accuse President Gustavo Petro directly for the loss of his guards but looks to him to rectify the situation. While currently ceasing his work and considering not returning to Colombia, Meléndez hopes the international recognition from the award may deter potential aggressors.

The Colombian embassy in London did not respond to requests for comments.
