Panamanian weightlifting has young and highly capable lifters. One of them is Ronnier Martínez from Veracruz, who despite the current situation, keeps up his training with the goal to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (or will it be Tokyo 2021?).
In his time of confinement due to the
coronavirus pandemic, 18-year-old Martinez, who is lifting in the 61-kilo category, trains in an old family workshop, which has been adapted thanks to financial support received partly from the Panama Olympic Committee.
"In the morning we do physics and conditioning, while in the afternoon we carry out pure lifting, based on the work plan of our coach José Manuel Ochoa," Martínez said.
“I am participating in virtual classes, as I'm also studying degree in Physiotherapy. In other words, I try to distribute my time well, ”he added.
The Tokyo qualifying event, World Cup, which Ronnier Martínez had planned to attend along with other Panamanian lifters, was planned to be held March 14-21 in Romania, but was postponed by
Covid-19.
“We were already exceeding our personal records, before receiving the news of the postponement of the World Cup. Now we are training not to the fullest, but we are focused on that we cannot give up or let our guard down, ”said Martínez, who has already competed in a Youth Olympics in Argentina 2018.
