Colombia: Millions of Bullets, Thousands of Grenades, and Missiles Disappear from Military Bases - President Gustavo Petro Blames Internal Corruption

Colombian President Gustavo Petro revealed that millions of bullets, thousands of grenades, and several missiles have gone missing from the Colombian military.
He attributed the disappearances to internal corruption and accused military personnel of selling weapons to arms traders.

The defense minister confirmed ongoing investigations into the matter.

Petro stated that these networks have been operating for a long time, commercializing arms using legal weapons from the Colombian military.

During surprise inspections of military bases Tolemaida and La Guajira on February 12 and April 1, respectively, significant discrepancies between inventory records and actual supplies were discovered.

At Tolemaida, over 808,000 missing bullets and nearly 10,000 fewer grenades than listed were found.

La Guajira had discrepancies of nearly 4.2 million bullets, over 9,300 grenades, two Spike missiles, 37 Nimrod missiles, and 550 rocket-propelled grenades.

The military supplies, according to Mr. Petro, were likely given to armed groups within Colombia but could have also been smuggled to Haiti or the international black market.

Colombian President expresses sadness over military forces being harmed by same munitions used in decades-long conflict.

Over 450,000 people have been killed in the conflict between government forces, left-wing guerrillas, and right-wing paramilitaries.

Military personnel have been convicted of corruption and human rights abuses.
