Argentina's President Discusses Trade, Economic Reforms, and Vision for the Future at Davos

Javier Milei outlines plans for economic transformation, trade relations, and capital market strategies at Bloomberg House in Davos.
At the Davos 2025 summit, Argentina's President Javier Milei discussed his country's economic reforms and trade strategies, including the possibility of leaving Mercosur to secure a free trade agreement with the United States.

He emphasized Argentina's commitment to open trade, economic transformation, and achieving sustainable growth through his administration's fiscal and monetary policies.

Milei highlighted a proposed six-hundred-billion-dollar investment in the United States, conveyed during a recent discussion between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and U.S. President Donald Trump.

He reiterated Argentina's historical ties with the U.S. and its alignment with free-market principles inspired by leaders like Margaret Thatcher and economists like Milton Friedman.

The President defended his reforms aimed at reducing inflation, improving poverty levels, and achieving fiscal discipline, stating that Argentina had shifted from monthly inflation rates of over ten percent to under three percent.

Non-oil GDP contributions now make up fifty-two percent of the economy, reflecting a diversification strategy under Vision 2030.

Milei also addressed concerns about potential departures from Mercosur, noting that while such steps would only be taken under extreme conditions, Argentina continues to work on trade agreements independently.

He criticized regulatory inefficiencies and outlined plans for lifting capital controls by aligning fiscal conditions with foreign investments.

Regarding foreign investment, he noted Argentina's collaboration with China and highlighted ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for additional financing to rebuild central bank reserves and stabilize the economy.

With midterm elections approaching, Milei stated his administration remains committed to freedom, reduced regulations, and empowering citizens.

He emphasized the need for cultural and economic reforms to ensure long-term prosperity and sustainability for Argentina.
